Travelling Notes: An Update

journal_des1

The last few months have seen me buy a van, quit my full-time job, and hop-skip-jump across a very frosty Europe. Like most who wave goodbye to security, I swing from absolute tummy-churning terror to an unbridled glee. It feels a little like floating a deep ocean; You’re weightless and free one moment and kicking madly for solid ground the next.

Having spent a good number of hours on trains and planes in the last few weeks, I’ve given my brain space and boredom to think about a few things. Fruits and vegetables are good for your belly, but long spaces of intermittent time are good for your mind. I find they’re the equivalent of sitting down in front of your closet and folding all your scrunched up clothes. I’ve come to the conclusion that I have little to no idea what I’m doing in this coming year, or hell, my life! What a revelation. Perhaps my time would have been better spent thinking about a shirtless Kylo Ren, or perhaps cats. You can never think too much about cats.

In my wildest dreams, I hope to write the first draft of my book this year. If I can harness my spud-like attention span for a few hours a day, this could happen. I also hope for belly-laughs, lots of hugs, nights spent looking at the stars, and just enough money for stiff cups of black coffee and crinkled second-hand books. If that sounds trite, it’s because I don’t have a whole lot to hang on to; Coffee and books might just be the most solid fixtures in the next year.

Christmas in Budapest

For once, no one cried or fought which could be my family’s biggest accomplishment to date. What can I say – we’re growing. At one point my sock inched down into my boot, gathering uncomfortably like a wrinkled intestine and it looked like I might be the one to burst the happy familial bubble, but I pulled myself together in the nick of time. We ate delicious food, silly-laughed, and ate more croissants than people with our BMI’s ever should. It was blissful, and I’ll keep the happy memories close to my heart for years to come.

Norway

Have you ever been to a place without any expectations of what it would be like? For some reason – maybe because I was so busy panicking about the FUTURE – I went to Norway with no expectations. Oh boy, it delivered. There was snow, ice skating, skiing, tobogganing, snowmobiling, too many 80’s movies (nobody puts baby in the corner), and the Northern Lights. It was probably the most Norwegian week anybody has ever had. It was a delight to be on the receiving end of such friendly hospitality, and it inspired me to one day be a good host to friends and family. I just need to learn how to cook/have a home- No biggy.

Until next time.
